Is Trap Easier than Skeet?
This question is asked often. Let’s stipulate that we are not referring to the international versions of trap and skeet but rather the more common variations shot in the UK and US.
Both are challenging and exacting, and no matter where you go in the world, the games basically are the same. A skeet target in England is the same as one in the US. This consistency lets people practice wherever they are and shoot at a very high level.
In some ways, the fact that trap is shot using an oscillating target launcher makes the game somewhat more predictable. But the necessary leads are not very big, particularly from the 16-yard line, and some people can shoot trap reasonably well without perfect technique.
Skeet, however, puts an emphasis on a smooth gun swing and requires you to generate some lead on the targets, particularly at stations 3, 4, and 5. The shots are at relatively close range but make no mistake, a slip in concentration will cost you targets.
A common saying is that trap is easier to learn than skeet but harder to master. That may be true, but I wouldn’t say that one is easier than the other. Both can be mastered to perfection if you’re willing to put in the work.
